MNA Business Desk: Bangladesh will lodge case in New York within this month to get back the money stolen from the central bank (BB) reserve, said Finance Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal.
“We’ve taken preparation to file the case. It would be filed in New York by this month as the theft happened there,” said the Finance Minister.
Mustafa Kamal made the disclosure to the reporters after a three-hour meeting with officials concerned, including the BB Governor Fazle Kabir, on the reserve theft at the Secretariat on Sunday.
“A lawyer from Bangladesh and another from New York to look after the case. They will jointly fix the time to file the case as we’ve time to February 3 for filing the case,” he said, adding,”But, final decision has yet been taken against whom the case will be lodged.”
BSS adds : Kamal said the two lawyers will take decision who will be the defendant and who will be the plaintiff in the case. Hackers stole a total $101 million from Bangladesh’s account at the New York Fed in February 2016.
Of the amount, $81 million was transferred to four accounts at the Rizal Commercial Banking Corp (RCBC) in Manila and another $20 million to a bank in Sri Lanka.
But the transfer of $20 million to Sri Lanka had failed because of a spelling error by the hackers. Later, BB was able to retrieve about $15 million from Philippines.
