CIA helped to foil terror attack in Russia

MNA International Desk: Russian president Vladimir Putin telephoned US president Donald Trump on Sunday to thank him for information that allowed Russia to prevent a terror attack on its soil, Interfax news agency quoted the Kremlin as saying.

Information provided by the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) allowed Russian law-enforcement agencies to prevent a planned attack on the Kazansky Cathedral in Russia’s second city of St Petersburg, and arrest the plotters, reported news agency.

Putin, in his phone call with Trump, said Russia would alert US authorities if it received any information about any attack being planned on the United States, Interfax quoted the Kremlin as saying.

The attack was allegedly planned to take place on Saturday, Russia says.

A White House statement said “terrorists” were captured prior to an attack “that could have killed large numbers of people”.

Russia’s FSB security service said in a statement on Friday that it had detained seven members of a cell of Islamic State supporters and seized a significant amount of explosives, weapons and extremist literature.

The cell was planning to carry out a suicide attack at a religious institution and kill citizens on Saturday, the FSB statement said (in Russian).

The group was preparing explosions targeting the cathedral and other public places in Russia’s second city, the Kremlin statement said on Sunday.
