Government alert on condition in North South University

governmentMNA Editorial Desk: Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid has said that the government is alert on the condition in the North South University (NSU), a reputed private university, from where some students have got mixed up in terrorist activities.

Missing students are found to be getting connected in terrorism, Nahid said at a meeting with the UGC chairman in the Secretariat on Tuesday. The minister also witnessed that this trend appeared more marked among smart and meritorious student from well-to-do families.

“Such allegations against NSU teachers and students had risen earlier. We are aware of this university. We also held meetings with them earlier.”

Nahid also said, “Recent incidents have shocked everyone in a way which the previous ones didn’t because they were considered random. It’s not as if we didn’t notice or didn’t discuss them. A teacher was fired from there (NSU).”

Earlier on Saturday, education minister Nurul Islam Nahid has asked the educational institutions of the country to inform the government if any student is found absent there for more than 10 days.

Nahid made the direction at a press conference at the Secretariat. The education minister has directed the country’s educational organizations amid news over a number of missing students.

He said this in the wake of the deadly attacks in Gulshan’s Holey Artisan restaurant and famous Sholakia Eidgah grounds during Eid-ul-Fitr. Some of the attackers, who were the students of various private institutions including North South University, Scholastica School, had been missing for months.

Most of the youths who carried out the Gulshan bloodbath remained missing for six months or more while their families came to know about them only after they were killed in a succeeding army-led security crackdown on July 2 morning.

On the other hand, yesterday the authorities of North South University said that they will cancel the studentship of any enrolled student if found intentionally absent for a semester in an academic year.
