HC halts DSCC wards elections

MNA National Desk: The High Court has stayed the elections in the wards of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC), planned for Feb 26.

Justice Tariq ul Hakim and Justice Md Faruque passed the order on Thursday after hearing a writ petition by a voter from Demra.

The Election Commission (EC) announced the polls schedule on Jan 9 after the death of former Dhaka North City mayor Annisul Huq.

The court also issued a rule asking the authorities concerned, including the LGRD secretary and the Chief Election Commissioner, to explain within four weeks as to why the schedule to arrange the DSCC polls will not be declared illegal.

Earlier, on 17 January, Mozammel Miah, a voter, filed writ petition seeking stay on the upcoming polls to the ward councilor posts of DSCC.
