Jail Killing Day: A Chapter of Brutality

Jail Killing DayMNA Editorial Desk: The Jail Killing Day, considered as a chapter of brutality of the nation’s history, commemorating the assassinations of four national leaders is being observed mournfully across the country today.

On this day the four Liberation War heroes of Bangladesh – Syed Nazrul Islam, Tajuddin Ahmed, M Mansur Ali and AHM Qamaruzzaman were killed in captivity by some Army officers.

They were assassinated inside the Dhaka Central Jail on November 3, 1975 — 79 days after Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and most of his family members were killed on August 15, 1975.

In separate messages, President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina recalled with gratitude the immense contributions of the slain four national leaders in the country’s Liberation War.

Marking the day, Bangladesh Television, Bangladesh Betar and other TV channels and radio stations will air special programmes while the newspapers will publish special articles on the four national leaders.

Different political parties including pro-liberation parties and socio-cultural- professional organizations will pay deep homage to the slain four national leaders, who were also close associates of Bangabandhu, in observance of the day in a befitting manner.

Awami League general secretary Obaidul Quader on Wednesday in a statement urged all to observe the day with due solemnity.

  • Syed Nazrul Islam– was the vice president and acting president of Mujibnagar Government, the first government of Bangladesh. He was the former vice-chairman of BAKSAL.
  • Tajuddin Ahmed– was a lawyer, politician and the first Prime Minister of Bangladesh. He was a former finance minister and a member of parliament.
  • Abul Hasnat Muhammad Qamaruzzaman– was a member of parliament; he was elected president of Awami League in 1974. He was the Minister of Relief and Rehabilitation in the Mujibnagar government.
  • Muhammad Mansur Ali– was the Finance minister of Mujibnagar government. He was the Prime Minister of Bangladesh in the Baksal government.

But later the killers got indirect benefits from two presidents of Bangladesh Ziaur Rahman and Hossain Mohammad Ershad.

Hoverer, Jail Killing Day is observed by the ruling Awami League (AL) and many other political organizations on November 3 each year.
