Kazi Nazrul Islam’s 118th birth anniversary today


MNA Feature Desk: The 118th birth anniversary of national poet Kazi Nazrul Islam is being celebrated with due respect across the country today.

The government and various socio-cultural organizations have chalked out elaborate programmes to celebrate the birthday.

The theme for this year’s birth anniversary celebrations of the poet has been styled as “Anti-colonialism and Anti-imperialism Soldier Nazrul”.

Born on May 25 in 1899 in Churulia, Burdwan of West Bengal in India, Kazi Nazrul Islam’s fiery poems inspired the mass to fight against injustice and the oppression of the colonial rule.

This year, the central programme of Nazrul’s birth anniversary will be held at Osmani Memorial Auditorium in the capital at 3:30pm.

President Md Abdul Hamid will be present as the chief guest of the central programme, which will be presided over by  Asaduzzaman Noor, minister of Cultural Affairs.

Nazrul Institute is organizing an exhibition of the poet’s photos, poster and books to introduce him to the new generation. The public library will organize book exhibitions and an essay competition to mark the day.

A series of programmes have been undertaken to celebrate the day, including the placing of wreaths on the poet’s grave beside the Dhaka University Mosque.

Later, a commemorative meeting will be held on the mazaar premises which will be chaired by the vice-chancellor. The DU Club will arrange a cultural function titled “Rabindra-Nazrul Sangskritik Sandha” at 7:00pm, at the campus.

Channel I is hosting a “Nazrul Mela” to mark the day like it has done in previous years. A lifetime achievement award will be conferred to a talented artist at the festival.

Special programmes on Nazrul’s works, including his plays, poetry and songs, will be broadcast on TV channels and radio stations to mark the national poet’s birthday.
