MNA Feature Desk: The 74th birth anniversary of veteran freedom fighter, first elected mayor of Dhaka City Corporation and former president of Dhaka City Awami League Mohammad Hanif is being observed today through various programmes.
On the occasion, Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC), Dhaka City South Awami League, Mayor Mohammad Hanif Memorial Foundation and different social and cultural organisations will arrange doa, milad mahfil and food distribution among destitute, said a press release.
Hanif, who suffered critical splinter injuries in the August 21, 2004 grenade attack, died at the city’s Apollo Hospital on November 28, 2006 at the age of 62.
President Md Abdul Hamid, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury delivered separate messages marking the anniversary.
He was also a close aide to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and contributed to every democratic movement.
Hanif was an elected parliament member from Dhaka-12 constituency in 1973 and served as a whip of the national parliament.
