MNA Editorial Desk: Parliament Members on Sunday expressed their dissatisfaction over the recent Supreme Court’s verdict scrapping the 16th constitutional amendment that restored the parliament’s authority to remove Supreme Court judges on grounds of incapacity or misconduct.
Taking part in an unscheduled debate in the House, they strongly criticized appellate division and its pronouncement that the Jatiya Sangsad has no power to remove Supreme Court judges, reported news agency.
Speaking in the JS on points of order, the ministers and MPs, including Agriculture Minister Matia Chowdhury, Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed, Civil Aviation Minister Rashed Khan Menon, and Information Minister Hasanul Haq Inu, called upon the government to take a realistic decision on the issue.
The lawmakers said that the House has the power to remove any justice on the ground of their gross misconduct as the President appoint judges while the president himself could be impeached by the Jatiya Sangsad as members are the elected representatives of the people.
Tofail sad those who gave statements against 16th amendment, the minister said, “I have no language to condemn them. If anyone is destroyed the constitution, then Ziaur Rahman destroyed it, he followed Ayub Khan and formed the Supreme Judicial Council.”
Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister Rashed Khan Menon said the main objective to give such verdict is to bring the parliament under their jurisdiction, adding that the judgement has been given to protect their own interest, nothing else.
Agriculture Minister Begum Matia Chowdhury criticized Ziaur Rahman for forming Supreme Judicial Council through an Ordinance and regretted that Supreme Court liked Zia’s Ordinance.
