MNA Culture & Entertainment Desk: Shahid Qadri, the leading contemporary Bengali poet, has died in New York at the age of 74. The body of reputed Bangladeshi poet is expected to arrive in Dhaka early Wednesday.
The poet breathed his last in North Shore University Hospital at 7am (local time) on Sunday, his wife Neera Qadri confirmed news agency. He was hospitalized with high blood pressure and fever a week ago.
For his poetry, he was awarded Bangla Academy Award in 1973. He also received the Ekushey Padak for his contribution to language and literature in 2011.
Born in Dhaka in 1942, he is considered one of the prominent poets of post-1947 Bangla literature. He had been staying in the US for last three decades.
He is famous for books such as Uttaradhikar, Tomake Obhibadon Priyatama, Prem Biraha Bhalobasar Kabita, Kothao Kono Krondon Nei and Amar Chumbangullo Pouchhiye Dio.
Prime minister and cultural Affairs Minister Asaduzzaman Noor have expressed his sadness at the passing of the poet.
