MNA Feature Desk: Press Freedom Day is being observed across the world including Bangladesh today (Wednesday) to defend the media from attacks on their independence and to pay tribute to journalists who have lost their lives in the exercise of their profession.
This day was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in 1993 following a recommendation adopted at the 26th Session of United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization’s (UNESCO) General Conference in 1991.
The theme of this year’s day is ‘Critical minds for critical times: Media’s role in advancing peaceful, just and participatory society’.
United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called for an end to crackdowns on journalists who he described as a ‘voice of the voiceless’.
To mark the day, Jatiya Press Club organized a discussion at 11:00am. Bangladesh Online Media Association (BOMA) will also hold a discussion at the Jatiya Press Club at 3:30pm.
