Samrat, Arman jailed for wildlife law violations, drunkenness

MNA National Desk: A mobile court of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has sentenced two expelled Jubo League leaders — Ismail Hossain Chowdhury Samrat and Enamul Hoque Arman — to six months in prison for wildlife law violations and drunkenness respectively.

RAB executive Magistrate Mohammad Sarwar Alam came up with the information while talking to reporters after the end of a raid at Samrat’s office in Kakrail area in Dhaka around 6:20 pm on Sunday.

The RAB arrested the duo from Cumilla on Sunday over their involvement in running illegal casino in Dhaka.

Later, the elite police unit also raided homes at Shantinagar and Mohakhali DOHS in the capital.

“Samrat was sentenced to six months’ jail for possessing two skins of wild animals which were recovered from his office while Arman got the punishment as he was found drunk when he was arrested from Cumilla,” said Sarwar Alam.

Besides, one foreign-made pistol, one magazine, five bullets, 19 bottles of foreign liquor, two machines of providing electric shocks and 1,160 pieces of Yaba tablets were recovered from the office of Samrat, said Lt Col Sarwar Bin Kashem, director, legal and media wing of RAB.

Two separate cases will be filed against Samrat, he said.

“Who’s Samrat’s godfather and who was behind him will be known after interrogation in remand,” Kashem added.

RAB started the drive at the office of Samrat in the city’s Kakrail area along with him around 1:40 pm.

An operation was under way on Arman’s home at Mirpur as well.

Arman was jailed because he was found in a drunken state during the arrest, the magistrate added.

The ruling Awami League’s youth front expelled Samrat as its Dhaka South unit president and Arman as vice president of the unit earlier in the day.

Earlier around 5:00 am, a team of RAB arrested Samrat and his associate Arman from Chauddagramupazila in Cumilla “on specific allegation”, said Lt Col Sarwar Bin Kashem, director, legal and media wing of RAB.

A local representative, seeking anonymity, said Samrat had taken shelter in the house of transport businessman Monir Hossain at Kunja Sreepur village in Alkara union.

On September 24, the government imposed a travel ban on Samrat.
