Save the Children expresses concern over rising violence against children

MNA Editorial Desk: The Save the Children has expressed its concern over an alarming rise in violence against children in the country recently.

According to its own observation, at least 30 incidents of rapes, gang rapes, murders and enforced disappearance, among others against them, took place in January of this year alone.

In addition, 28 children faced sexual harassment, it said in a statement on Tuesday, adding that even children were being made to commit crimes.

The international NGO pointed out that it estimated the incidents of violence against children in the last month just on the basis of those published in the media. So, the actual figure about this could be much higher.

Most of these incidents of violence against children are being caused by their relatives, neighbors, teachers and acquaintances, the Save the Children also said, suggesting that all government, non-government organizations working on children’s rights should jointly organize a social movement to prevent violence against children.

It lauded the government for its willingness and sincerity in protecting children, and taking up quick measures in bringing child murders to justice in the past.

Similarly, it said, those involved in sexual harassment and torture of children should also be punished exemplary.

To strengthen the government’s countrywide child protection activities, the Save the Children suggested putting utmost emphasis on applying the rule of law.
