Mahalaya is being observed


MNA Feature Desk: The auspicious occasion of Mahalaya, where Goddess Durga is invoked, is being observed across the country among Hindus. It marks the end of Pitri-paksha (fortnight of Shradh or mourning) and beginning of Devi-paksha (fortnight of the Goddess). It is said that Goddess Durga starts her journey towards Earth on the day of Mahalaya i.e. the first day of Devi-paksha. Since she is traditionally worshipped during spring, this Sharodiya (autumnal) festival is also known as Akaalbodhan (untimely invoking of the Goddess). Rangpur Mayhem: Several Hindu homes burnt, 1 Muslim killed, 30 injured and 33 detained


MNA Exclusive Desk: Police have detained 33 people in connection with arson attacks on the house of local Hindus in Rangpur yesterday. A man was killed and 30 others were hurt, including 7 policemen and mostly Muslim, after police fired rubber bullets and teargas shells as violence flared up in Horkoli Thakurpara village of Rangpur yesterday over an alleged Facebook post “demeaning Islam”. The deceased was identified as Habibur Rahman, a local Muslim. He died of bullet injuries at Rangpur Medical College Hospital (RMCH) where 11 of those wounded were undergoing treatment.
