Thousands suffer for Dhaka-Ctg highway gridlock

MNA National Desk: Thousands of people are suffering immensely as 30-kilometer long tailback was created on the Dhaka-Chattogram highway in Cumilla and Munshiganj districts on Wednesday.

The tailback stretched from Raipur of Cumilla’s Daudkandi upazila to Meghna Bridge area in Munshiganj’s Gazaria upazila.

The gridlock started from Tuesday 12:00 midnight, causing untold sufferings to the people who fast in severe hot weather.

Daudkandi Highway Police Station officer in-charge Abul Kalam Azad said goods-laden vehicles got stuck in Chattogram Port for several days due to cyclone Fani.

Excessive pressure of those goods-laden vehicles towards the capital from the Chattogram Port and construction works of the second bridge on the Meghna River mainly caused the gridlock.

Highway police are trying relentlessly to make the situation normal, OC Abul Kalam Azad added.

Some HSC examinees from Gourpur Munshi Fazlur Rahman Government Degree College said they had to walk around six kilometers to attend the Agricultural Studies second parer examination in time as their vehicles got stuck in the severe traffic congestion.

Billal Mazumder, driver of a Chattogram-bound truck, said it takes normally an hour from Dhaka to Daudkandi but now it is taking around nine hours to go to the destination.
