Wall collapse kills 26 at Indian wedding

MNA International Desk: A wall crashed down on an Indian wedding party during a storm killing at least 26 people including four children and injuring many more, police said on Thursday.

The 12-foot (3.6-metre) high wall collapsed late on Wednesday because of heavy rain, crashing down on the wedding party during dinner in a marriage hall in the western state of Rajasthan.

Police launched an investigation, detaining a wedding hall manager for causing death by negligence.

“We have registered a case and taken one of the managers of the banquet hall into custody,” district magistrate Narendra Kumar Gupta told reporters.

Gupta also announced compensation of 50,000 rupees ($775) for the family of each person killed.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said in a Twitter post he was pained by the accident.
