4th Death Anniversary of Veteran Leader Zillur Rahman Today

MNA Features Desk: The 4th death anniversary of former president of Bangladesh and veteran leader, Zillur Rahman, also former general secretary of Awami League, is being observed today with high respect to this glorious leader.

zillurHe breathed his last at Mount Elizabeth Hospital in Singapore on March 20, 2013. Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader urged activists and leaders of all party affiliate organizations to observe the day with due respect.

The party also paid tribute to the great leader at his grave at 8am today. Different social and political organizations paid floral tribute at the Dhaka’s Banani graveyard where the veteran Awami League leader rests in peace on this morning.

Besides, family of the late politician paid a visit to his grave and offered prayers seeking divine blessings for eternal peace of his departed soul. In the afternoon, special prayers will be held at his residence in Gulshan.

A discussion was organized in the Public Library to commemorate the life and works of the late politician.

zillurLate Zillur Rahman, a very senior Awami League leader made immeasurable sacrifices for the party throughout his life. He started his political career as a volunteer of Awami League and was inducted as the 19th president of the country on February 12, 2009. He discharged his responsibilities as general secretary of AL for 12 years for five different terms. On stormy times of Awami League he strongly took charge of situations many times and he contributes greatly for the political success of his party.

Zillur Rahman was born in Bhairab Upazila of Kishoreganj District at his maternal home. His father, Meher Ali Mian, was a lawyer. He was also the Chairman of the Mymensingh Local Board and Member of the District Board.

Zillur Rahman was married to fellow Awami League politician Ivy Rahman, the party’s secretary for women’s affairs. Ivy was killed in the 2004 Dhaka grenade attack. Together they had one son – Nazmul Hassan Papon and two daughters – Tania Bakht and Tanima Bakht. Papon is the president of the Bangladesh Cricket Board, managing director of Beximco Pharma and a Member of the Parliament. Hassan was elected from the same constituency as his father after his father vacated the seat to take over as president.

Looking into the educational background, Zillur Rahman graduated with an Intermediate of Arts (IA) in 1947 from Dhaka Intermediate College. In 1954, he got his MA with Honours in History and a LLB degree from Dhaka University.

Zillur Rahman participated in the Bengali language movement of 1952. Later, as an Awami League candidate, he was elected as a member of parliament in the 1970 national elections of Pakistan before the liberation war. During the Bangladesh Liberation War, he actively participated in the Government-in-exile. After the independence, he was elected MP from Bhairab in 1973, 1986, 1996, 2001 and 2008.

Zillur Rahman became the General Secretary of Awami League in 1972 and as already mentioned he was elected as a member of the parliament of independent Bangladesh for the first time in the 1973 general elections.

After the assassination of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, this veteran leader was arrested by the army junta and spent four years in prison. Zillur Rahman served as a minister in the Awami League government in the terms between 1996 and 2001.

We deeply mourn the loss of this great leader and will remember his contribution to this nation with great respect.
