MNA Feature Desk: The 50th birthday of Sajeeb Wazed Joy, the architect of Digital Bangladesh, grandson of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and son of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is today. On this day in 1975 (July 27), he enlightened the family of nuclear scientist MA Wazed Mia and Sheikh Hasina in Dhaka.
Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman named his grandson Joy as he was born in the year of war of independence. At present, Joy is serving as the Information & Communication Technology (ICT) Adviser of the Honorable Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
Bangladesh was lagging behind in the Information Technology sector for a long time. In the manifesto of the National Election of 2008, he introduced the idea ‘Digital Bangladesh’. IT expert Joy has brought a revolution on Information and Technology sector of the whole country. Bangladesh now has risen in the list of countries leading in the rapid spread of digital technology.
The revolution of digitalization is going on in the country now. He is playing an important part in flourishing the IT sector. The launch of Bangabandhu Satellite was an important milestone of Digital Bangladesh. The government has now taken up the project of launching Bangabandhu Satellite-2.
When Bangabandhu and his family were killed on 15 August 1975, Joy was in Germany with his parents. He later moved to India with his mother for political asylum. He spent his childhood there. After studying at St. Joseph’s College in Nainital, he started his university life at the University of Bangalore.
Then he transferred to the University of Texas at Arlington in the United States, where he graduated with BSc in Computer Engineering. Then Joy attended the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University, where he completed his Masters in Public Administration.
Sajeeb Wazed Joy married Christine Ann Overmier on October 26, 2002. They have a daughter.
Although he was interested in politics while studying, but enrolled himself in mainstream politics in 2010. On 25 February of that year, he was given the post of primary member of Rangpur district Awami League. In 2007, Joy elected as the Global Leader of the World by World Economic Forum.
