SC adjourned Mir Quasem’s review hearing

hearingMNA National Desk: The SC (Supreme Court) on Wednesday has adjourned the hearing of war crimes convict Jamaat-e-Islami leader Mir Quasem’s petition seeking a review of his death sentence until Sunday.

A five-member bench of the Appellate Division, headed by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha, passed the order after hearing on the petition that started Wednesday morning, reports news agency.

The other members of the bench are Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain, Justice Hasan Foez Siddique, Justice Mirza Hussain Haider and Justice Mohammad Bazlur Rahman.

Mir Quasem Ali was found guilty of charges by the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) and was sentenced to death in 2014. Later he challenged the verdict in March this year but the SC upheld the death sentence.

On Jun 6, the apex court released the full verdict and sent it to the International Crimes Tribunal, which then issued the death warrant before forwarding it to the jail authorities. Mir Quasem filed a petition on Jun 19 for a review of the top court’s verdict.

Top Jamaat-e-Islami financier Quasem, 64-year-old, was president of the Chittagong town unit of the Islami Chhatra Sangha, the then student wing of Jamaat, till 6 November 1971.
