Shyamal Kanti sent to jail on bribery charges

MNA National Desk: Narayanganj school teacher Shyamal Kanti Bhakta, who was publicly humiliated last year, has been sent to jail on charges of bribery.

On Wednesday morning, a Narayanganj court issued an arrest warrant for him after taking into account the charges brought against him by a colleague.

Plaintiff Morsheda Begum accused Shyamal of taking Tk 135,000 as bribe promising to include her as an employee in the government’s monthly payment order or MPO scheme.

Hours after the order was out, Shyamal surrendered to the court and pleaded for bail. The court sent him to jail, rejecting his plea.

Advocate Shakhawat Hossain, lawyers of Shyamal Kanti, said they will file appeal petition with the High Court against the order.

On May 13 last year, locals beat him for allegedly hurting religious sentiments. At one stage, local MP AKM Selim Osman forced him to do sit-ups holding his ears.
