President Abdul Hamid invites BNP to dialogue

MNA Editorial Desk: President Abdul Hamid has invited the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) for discussion over reformation of the election commission on 18 December.

“The president will start dialogue on the formation of the new EC from 18 December. The first meeting will be held with the BNP at 4:30pm on the day at Bangabhaban,” the president’s press secretary Joynal Abedin told to reporters.

The president will also hold meetings with Jatiya Party on 20 December, Liberal Democratic Party and Krishak Sramik Janata League on 21 December and Jatiya Samajtantrik Party-Inu on 22 December.

Earlier, Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) sought appointment with the president to submit the 13-point proposals which was recently given by the party’s chairperson Khaleda Zia for reconstitution of the EC.

BNP’s Senior Joint Secretary General Rizvi Ahmed and Vice-Chairman Ruhul Alam Chowdhury submitted the party’s proposals at Bangabhaban. Abdul Hamid would open the dialogue with the BNP on 18 December.

However, the tenure of current EC expires in February next. The new EC will conduct the next general election scheduled to be held in 2019.

Meanwhile, Sheikh Hasina at a press conference on December 3 said, ‘She [Khaleda] has made her proposal; now she can tell the president about it, and he’ll make the decision…we’ve nothing to say… according to the rules, the President will consider their proposal.’
