Adulteration in cosmetics or poisonous beauty products

MNA Editorial Desk: Adulteration in cosmetics can be defined as – addition of foreign substances, being contaminated by chemicals, or a poisonous or deleterious substance with beauty products.

Several  environmental  factors  relating  to  storage  e.g. light,  humidity,  oxygen,  temperature  etc.  can  produce detrimental  effects on  stored products, but more deterioration usually results from a combination of these factors, which leads to the development of living organism including molds, mites, bacteria etc.

Flying in the face of all rules and regulations, fake and substandard beauty products have flooded in many cities of Bangladesh.

Rural markets in almost every district in our country with unscrupulous businessmen are making and selling these septic cosmetics products to general people, allegedly with the help of law enforcers.

That’s not all. According to experts, these cosmetics, made with dangerous chemicals, can cause serious harm to skin and hair instead of serving the purpose of enhancing beauty.

Sources said traders supply fake cosmetics to shops in several markets and elsewhere in the country after tagging labels of reputed local and international brands.

beautyFactories are manufacturing such cosmetics in Dhaka’s Jinjira, Kushirbagh, Kalindi, Nandail, Bamonshur of Keraniganj area, Chalkbazar, Kamalbagh, Islambagh, Begumbazar, Rahmatganj, DebidasGhat, Malitola, Laghbagh, Borokatra, Chotokatra and Kamrangirchar.

Raw material for manufacturing these cosmetics is collected from shops in the capital’s Mitford area while empty packets or containers of reputed branded products are used in packaging the fake /substandard beauty products.

Fake beauty products including moisturizers, nail polish, lotions, cold creams, face wash, cleansers, soaps, powders, snows, lipsticks, shampoos, conditioners, bleach, hair dyes, oils and shaving creams, are produced in these factories.

Labels of reputed international and local brands are used on packets or containers of fake products to deceive consumers. The fake products only invite skin and other disorders.

Some skin-brightening products contain chemicals to create an extra layer on the skin to prevent contact with sunlight which may cause adverse effects in the long run and even cause skin cancer.

Continuous use of such products can cause cancer and advised consumers to be cautious while buying toiletries and cosmetics.

On this critical situation the common people must have to be concerned about buying these adulterated products. Buy cosmetics from trusted stores and make sure that the product contains all information required. Avoid buying compounded products and consult your physician if you notice an adverse effect.
