MNA National Desk: Nisha Desai Biswal, the US point person for South Asia, has visited Dhaka terror attack site, the Gushan cafe that terrorists stormed on July 1 and killed 20 people including nine Italians, seven Japanese, one Indian and an American citizen of Bangladesh origin.
The Islamic State (IS) has supposedly demanded responsibility for the occurrence at Holey Artisan Bakery, in Gulshan diplomatic zone, which is visited by foreigners.
The US assistant secretary of State remained there for around 20 minutes on Monday. She will also leave on Monday, finishing her two-day visit, for Sri Lanka after meeting Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal.
World leaders had promised to support Bangladesh in fighting terrorism following the unprecedented attack. Italy and Japan have decided to conduct coordinated diplomatic and intelligence actions in Bangladesh.
After visiting Gulshan, Biswal sited for a meeting with diplomats from the United Kingdom, Australia and Canada to discuss the present condition in Bangladesh after back-to-back attacks on Dhaka cafe and Sholakia in Kishorganj district.
The conversation was held at the residence of US Ambassador in Dhaka Marcia Bernicat. It continued over an hour and highlighted on security issues.
The High Commissioners of the three countries came out from Bernicat’s residence at 9:45pm after the meeting. Bernicat and US Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asian Affairs Manpreet Anand were also present at the conference.
Biswal will meet Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at 5pm today after her meeting with Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan at 3pm, officials at Prime Minister’s Office and Secretariat ensured.
Earlier, on Sunday, she met Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali and Foreign Secretary M Shahidul Haque at state guesthouse Padma and discussed Bangladesh’s bilateral relations with the United States and the security situation.
However, Biswal had visited Dhaka on 5 and 6 May last after the brutal murder of USAID staff Xulhaz Mannan in Dhaka on 25 April.
