BTRC to restart Citycell operations on 6 Nov

CitycellMNA Business Desk: The Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) on Sunday decided to restart the spectrum allocation for Citycell obeying with a court order.

BTRC chairman Shahjahan Mahmood confirmed this and a decision has been taken to restore Citycell’s operation can carry on its services starting this afternoon.

The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court asked the BTRC why it had not yet restored the spectrum of Citycell, the country’s first mobile phone operator.

A four-member HC bench, led by chief justice SK Sinha, passed the verbal order in the morning.

On October 20, Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission cancelled the spectrum of Bangladesh’s first mobile operator that served users for more than two decades.

On October 24, the country’s first mobile-phone operator filed the petition five days after BTRC suspended its spectrum allocation following the beleaguered operator’s failure to pay the full amount of its dues on time.

The dues include the spectrum renewal fee at Tk 229 crore, annual licence fee of Tk 10 crore, annual spectrum fee of Tk 27.14 crore, VAT Tk 39.92 crore and late fees of Tk 135 crore, according to a BTRC notice.

As per the commission data, Citycell had 1.5 lakh subscribers and 450 employees.
