Suspended Gazipur mayor Mannan released from jail

MNA National Desk: M A Mannan, suspended mayor of the Gazipur City Corporation, was released on Friday from jail on bail granted by the High Court.

Mannan was released from Kashimpur Central Jail-1 on Saturday morning after the jail authorities had received necessary documents related to his bail.

Leaders and activists of BNP and its associated bodies received him at the jail gate giving floral Bouquets.

Mannan, also an adviser to the BNP chairperson, was detained in Dhaka on February 11, 2015 for his suspected involvement in an arson attack on a passenger bus in Gazipur on February 4.

However, the government suspended Mannan on August 19, 2015 as he was charged in a violence case. Panel mayor Asadur Rahman Kiron was made the acting mayor upon a court directive the next month.

Meanwhile, he was granted bail in 22 cases on March 2016 after languishing in jail for 13 months. He got back his mayoral post as the High Court stayed the government order.

But in April 2016, he was arrested again in a case filed for setting fire to passenger buses and was suspended again after he was charge-sheeted in another case.
