Nasirnagar temple attacks: 9 more detained

attacksMNA National Desk: Law enforcement agency on Sunday morning detained nine more miscreants for their involvement in the attacks on the Hindu community in Nasirnagar upazila of Brahmanbaria.

Identities of the detainees could not be known immediately. Abu Jafar, officer-in-charge of Nasirnagar Police Station, confirmed that police conducted separate drives in different areas of the upazila and arrested them.

Meanwhile, five days after the violent attacks, a group of miscreants also set fire on three houses of the Hindhu community and a temple on 3 October.

An attempt was made again to set fire on the house of the upazila vice-president and Juba League president, Anjan Kumar Dev.

Howener, ruling Awami League already suspended three of its local leaders over their involvement in the attack on Friday.

They are Nasirnagar Union Parishad Chairman Abul Hashem, also assistant secretary of AL’s upazila unit, Faruk Mia, president of Haripur union, and Haji Suruj, chief of Chapartola union unit.

The district AL also formed a five-member committee, headed by its vice-president Helal Uddin, to probe whether the suspended leaders were involved in the attacks, reported news agency.

A mob demolished a number of Hindu temples and nearly 100 houses in Nasirnagar on October 30 following a rumour of a Facebook post demeaning the Holy Kaaba.

Sunday’s attack on the Hindus and their temples left at least 20 injured. Two cases were filed against 1,200 unidentified people. The police have arrested 11 people so far, identifying them from video footage.

Photos and videos of the attacks and witness statements advocate that some local leaders of Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat, Hefazat-e-Islam and Jamaat-e-Islami, and even the Awami League took part in the ferocious demonstrations and prompted the attacks.
