Promotion and imprisonment and dramatic bail comes together for Fakhrul

mf2Promotion and imprisonment and dramatic bail comes together for Mirza Fakhrul as he was ordered to be sent to the prison just after he was made BNP’s Secretary General and just after four hours at prison, he was dramatically granted bail.

Mirza Fakhrul surrendered at Dhaka’s Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court as the bail granted to him for three cases by the High Court expired on Wednesday. Metropolitan Magistrate Golam Nabi granted him bail for one case but refused for that for the other two cases, which were filed on January, 2015. In consequence to this decision of the court, Fakhrul was ordered for imprisonment, said, Abdullah Abu, public prosecutor of Metropolitan Sessions Judges Court.

Previously, Mirza Fakhrul had secured interim bail from the High Court over the three cases filed in accusation of violence during the BNP-led 20 Party Alliance’s violent movement from January, 2015. After securing the bail from the High Court, he went abroad for medical treatment and later came back to Bangladesh to participate in politics actively.

Mirza Fakhrul has been the acting Secretary General of BNP for last five years and just before he was denied the extension of bail, he was named the Secretary General of BNP. Party leaders and activists gathered at BNP office at Naya Paltan to greet the new Secretary General but their plan was ruined by hearing that he has been sent to the prison.

According to the Supreme Court, Fakhrul should be given bail until the rule was resolved. The rule was resolved in High Court on Nov 24 and Fakhrul was granted three months’ interim bail but he opted for permission to file an appeal to get a permanent bail.

The BNP leader was told to surrender in 15 days as a Supreme Court bench heaed by SK Sinha resolved his plea on Feb 29. And for now, it was taken for granted that imprisonment awaits the leader and the workers need to wait for the return of Mirza Fakhrul but that anticipation did not prevail for long.

Mirza Fakhrul was granted bail around 4pm while he was still in jail after his lawyers pleaded for a review of the decision on medical grounds. So, at the end of the day, it remains a day of Mirza Fakhrul and BNP workers will have the opportunity to greet their new Secretary General at last.
