Govt forms panel over quota system review

MNA Education Desk: The government has formed a seven-member committee with Cabinet Secretary Mohammad Shafiul Alam as its convener to review the existing quota system in public service, reported news agency. The other members of the committee are secretaries of the Public Administration, Finance Division, Liberation War Affairs, Legislative Division and PSC and PMO acting secretary, he said. The committee has been asked to submit its report within 15 working days. MNA Business Desk: The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court has rejected BGMEA’s plea for review  of the order to demolish their 16-story head office building adjacent to capital’s Hatirjheel. After the hearing, the three-member Appellate Bench headed by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha turned down the BGMEA’s review plea on Sunday. SC conduct hearing of Nizami’s review petition

SC started to conduct hearing of Nizami’s review petition this morning. The apex court, SC (Supreme Court) on Tuesday has started hearing a petition filed by war crimes convict Motiur Rahman Nizami for a review of his death sentence challenging its verdict that upheld the International Crimes Tribunal’s judgment sentencing him to death. The proceedings started at the four-member appeals bench led by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha at 9.30am. Nizami seeks review of death penalty

1971 Al-Badr commander Motiur Rahman Nizami, who is on death-row for war crimes during Liberation War, seeks review of his death penalty. Nizami was given the verdict of death sentence in 2014. In January of this year, the Supreme Court had rejected Nizami’s appeal to change the International Crimes Tribunal’s 2014 verdict. During the 1971 war, Nizami was the head of the Jamaat’s then student wing, Islami Chhatra Shangha.
