ADB lauds Bangladesh for self-sufficiency in rice output

MNA Editorial Desk: The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has lauded Bangladesh for achieving self-sufficiency in rice output, but voiced worry over falling income of farming community. “This progress was largely driven by the Green Revolution technologies that put high yielding seed varieties in the hands of our farmers,” Takehiko Nakao, the ADB’s president, told a three-day Rural Development and Food Security Forum that opened in Manila on Monday. Import duty on rice increases to 55pc

MNA Business Desk: The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has increased import duty on rice to 55 per cent from existing 28 per cent aiming to help raising local paddy prices. The NBR issued a circular in this regard on Wednesday. According to food ministry, 0.2 million tonnes of rice was imported both by the private sector and government so far (until April 16) in the current financial year (FY’19) which was 3.3 million tonnes in the corresponding period of last year. MNA Business Desk: The government has cleared a proposal to buy 50,000 tonnes rice from a Thai company through international tender, reported news agency. The cabinet committee on government purchase approved the proposal to buy the parboiled rice at $438 per tonne at a meeting chaired by Finance Minister AMA Muhith on Wednesday.
