US won men’s 4×200 meters freestyle relay

USMNA Sports Desk: Michael Phelps gained his second gold medal and the 21st of his career as the US (United States) won the men’s 4×200 meters Olympic freestyle relay on Tuesday. It was the fourth successive US Olympic victory in the event.

The most successful Olympian of all time swam the final leg to extend his career tally to a total of 26 medals, also including two silvers and two bronze.

Earlier, he had won gold number 20 with victory in the 200m butterfly. In the 200-metre event he clocked 1:53.36, while in the relay, the team finished at 7:00.66.

Phelps is the long course world record holder in the 100-meter butterfly, 200-meter butterfly and 400-meter individual medley as well as the former long course world record holder in the 200-meter freestyle and 200-meter individual medley.

He has won a total of 79 medals in major international long-course competition, totaling 64 gold, 13 silver and 3 bronze spanning the Olympics, the World, and the Pan Pacific Championships.

Phelps’s international titles and record-breaking performances have earned him the World Swimmer of the Year Award seven times and American Swimmer of the Year Award nine times as well as the FINA Swimmer of the Year Award in 2012.
