Verdict on Mir Quasem’s review petition August 30

verdictMNA National Report: A five-member appeal bench led by chief justice Surendra Kumar Sinha fixed the final verdict on Mir Quasem’s review petition on August 30, Tuesday.

The appellate division of Supreme Court concluded the hearing on the petition filed by death row convict Jamaat leader Mir Quasem Ali seeking review of its earlier verdict that upheld his death penalty for crimes against humanity during the War of Independence in 1971.

The other four members of the panel are Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain, justice Hasan Foyez Siddiqui, justice Mirza Hossain Haider, and justice Muhammad Bazlur Rahman.

Mir Quasem Ali was found guilty of charges by the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) and was sentenced to death in 2014. Later he challenged the verdict in March this year but the SC upheld the death sentence.

On Jun 6, the apex court released the full verdict and sent it to the International Crimes Tribunal, which then issued the death warrant before forwarding it to the jail authorities. Mir Quasem filed a petition on Jun 19 for a review of the top court’s verdict.

Top Jamaat-e-Islami financier Quasem, 64-year-old, was president of the Chittagong town unit of the Islami Chhatra Sangha, the then student wing of Jamaat, till 6 November 1971.
