Sheikh Hasina remains President while Obaidul elected GS

MNA Editorial Desk: Sheikh Hasina remains President and Obaidul Quader is elected the new General Secretary (GS) of country’s oldest political party, Awami League. The decision came during the late hours of the second day of the 20th National Council of the party.

The post of President never faced challenged from the very beginning of the council but there was severe interest from the people for the position of General Secretary as it was in discussion that, the veteran politician Syed Ashraful Islam might be replaced with a new GS and that exactly happened.

The new leadership of the party for the next three years was finalized after a meeting, discussion and election of the Councilors at the capital’s Institute of Engineers Bangladesh (IEB).

Syeda Sazeda Chowdhury proposed the name of Sheikh Hasina as the party President and she was chosen unopposed. Election Commissioner Yousuf Hossain Humayun declared her winner as their was no other candidate.

After that, the former General Secretary for two terms, Syed Ashraful Islam proposed Obaidul Quader’s name as his successor. Jahangir Kabir Nanak expressed his support in Quader’s favor. As there was no other candidate, the road transport minister Obaidul Quader was elected the new General Secretary of Awami League unopposed.

It is still not declared if Sheikh Hasina’s son and ICT Advisor to the Prime Minister, Sajeeb Wazed Joy will be placed in the new committee or not, which is being discussed a lot among the people. Though Sheikh Hasina has told that, Joy is already holding a great role with the government and it is not necessary to bring him to the new committee. Joy, himself ha showed lack of interest to be on the committee according to some sources.

In the mean while, BNP’s General Secretary Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has congratulated immediately the new President and General Secretary of Awami League. He said, he is hopeful that the newly elected leaders of Awami League will work to bring back democracy and people’s rights.

We all wish the new President, Sheikh Hasina and General Secretary, Obaidul Quader of Awami League bests to ensure the party’s contribution towards people’s welfare.
