Sultan Mela begins in front of Sultan Mancha in Narail

MNA Culture & Entertainment Desk: A seven-day Sultan Mela in remembrance of the 92th birth anniversary of celebrated artist SM Sultan began on Monday in front of Sultan Mancha on the premises of Narail Government Victoria College. The fair will continue until January 21.

SM Sultan Foundation, in association with the district administration, has organized the fair to mark the birth anniversary of the renowned artist.

Deputy speaker Fazle Rabbi Miah inaugurated the fair as chief guest in the afternoon with deputy commissioner and president of Sultan Foundation Helal Mahmud Sharif in the chair.

A total of 100 stalls with traditional textile and cottage industry products set up for sale in the fair.

Sheikh Mohammed Sultan, better known as SM Sultan and also as Lal Mia, was a famous Bengali artist born at Masimdia village of Narail in 1923. He is famous for his paintings and drawings that mostly focus on the peasants of Bangladesh. He died on October 10, 1994.

His first art exhibition was hosted in 1946 in Simla, but no work from this period survives, not even photographs, as Sultan was totally indifferent to preservation of his work. Sultan was the only Bangladeshi artist to exhibit alongside Picasso, Dalí and Braque at the Victoria Embankment Gardens, Hampstead, London, in 1950.
