Fazilatunnesa Mujib: The woman behind success

FazilatunnesaMNA Feature Desk: It can be easily said that for our father of nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the woman behind his success was his wife, Begum Fazilatunnesa Mujib.

The 86th birth anniversary of Bangamata Begum Fazilatunnesa Mujib will be observed today. On this day in 1930, she was born in a respectable Muslim family at Tungipara village of the then Gopalganj sub-division in Faridpur district.

Her early schooling was in a missionary school but later she did home schooling. She was assassinated along with Bangabandhu and most of her family members on the fateful night of August 15 in 1975.

She lost her parents at the age of five and was raised by her future mother-in-law, mother of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. She was married to Bangabandhu at the age of 11 and had three sons and two daughters.

The ruling Awami League (AL) and its associate bodies and other socio-cultural organizations have drew out elaborate programme to mark her birth anniversary. Other socio-cultural organizations including Bangabandhu Sangskritik Jote have also drawn up wide programs to mark the day.

Sheikh Fazilatunnesa was an outstanding homemaker. She prepared her children to be good citizens and worthy children of a great father. This lady had not only looked after the family but had also lent her hand in keeping the Awami League organized.

During hard times, she never expressed her worries or dismay. Instead, she encouraged and frequently advised the leaders and party men on how to proceed in times of trouble.

Begum Mujib was kept under house arrest during the liberation war by Pakistani army until December 17, 1971, a day after the country was liberated. Whenever Bangabandhu was in jail for political reasons, she would keep contact with the Awami League leadership and give guidance in her husband’s absence.

Not only that, she was also courageous, determined, painstaking, and a true and ideal daughter-in-law. Fazilatunnesa was also known for her leadership skills.
