6,000 Rohingya orphan children to be rehabilitated

MNA Exclusive Desk: State Minister for Social Welfare Ministry Nuruzzaman Ahmed on Tuesday said that the government will rehabilitate some 6,000 Rohingya orphan children after giving them field card.

“There will be separate arrangements for the Rohingya orphan children aged between 0-18. They will also be divided into two groups” said Nuruzzaman. “By filling up a form, the government is making database on the orphan children.” He also added.

He told media that his ministry had already urged the government to allocate 200 bighas of land for their rehabilitation.

Besides, Zillar Rahman, secretary of Social Welfare Ministry, said that the activities of filling up form have already been started. A total of 120 staffs of the ministry are working to enlist orphan children.

Meanwhile, some 1,850 orphan children have been enlisted while their total number is around 6000, he informed.

About 87,000 refugees entered Bangladesh in 2016 following the military crackdown. There are already almost 400,000 Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh in squalid camps near its border with Myanmar.

However, the region has seen simmering anxiety between its Buddhist and Muslim populations since communal violence broke out in 2012.

A growing chorus of Muslim leaders around the world has condemned Burma’s actions, which Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan dubbed a “genocide.”
