SC upheld death penalty of Mufti Hannan

MNA National Desk: Supreme Court upheld death penalty of Mufti Hannan, Harkat-ul-Jihad (HuJI) leader, 2 others in a case filed over grenade attack on former British High Commissioner Anwar Choudhury.

The SC scrapped petitions by the militant leader and two others to review the Appellate Division’s verdict upholding their death sentences on Sunday.

A three-member bench of the Appellate Division led by chief justice Surendra Kumar Sinha passed the order after dismissing the review appeal of the HuJi chief.

Two people were killed and the then British High Commissioner to Bangladesh Anwar Choudhury was among about 70 injured in the grenade attack at Hazrat Shahjalal Shrine in Sylhet on May 21, 2004.
